Rein Community Service Project performed in conjunction with
Day and Residential Senior Centers of Hilo.
Elders are the most respected members of Hawaiian society. The elders, known as Kapuna, are deeply respected for the knowledge, history and cultural traditions they share with the community. Spend time alongside these warm, energetic and spirited seniors who are so deeply valued in their community. Join the Kapuna at their community centers, as you participate together in crafts, recreational activities and Hawaiian cultural projects. Also spend time at Residential Centers, where you will join the Kapuna on nature walks, participate in 'talk story' (legendary story telling), and assist with Center projects that will enhance the surroundings of the residents. Share the gift of your time and company, as you participate in this unique cultural opportunity and build lasting friendships with the Kapuna.
- Community service participants volunteer with the same project for the length of the program, in order to create meaningful bonds between our volunteers and the seniors they are helping.
- Participants volunteer Monday - Friday for three consecutive weeks, earning a total of 80 hours of Community Service.
- The goal of Project HAWAII is not only to give back to the community but for our participants to also learn and grow through their experiences.
